How to Host a Workshop

I offer Beat-the-Clock Essay Workshops to homeschoolers in the mid-Atlantic region.* If you have a support group, or can assemble 10 or more students, I would be happy to do a workshop in your area. The ideal size for workshops is about 15-25 students plus any number of auditing parents, but I am willing to work with larger groups as well.

Hosting a workshop is fun and easy, and in return for hosting, you and your student may attend the workshop free. It's not hard-- all you need to do is locate a place that will accomodate a group, tell people about the event, collect registrations, and show up!

If you might be interested in hosting a workshop, here is what you can do:

Before the event:

  • E-mail me to set up a date. (9/10/07- Note: I just discovered that e-mail from this link has not been delivering correctly for about 6 months, so if you e-mailed and didn't receive a response, please e-mail again!)
  • Locate a suitable place. We will need enough table or desk space for all the students and parents who will participate, and I need a whiteboard or chalkboard that is visible to everyone. I like to use PowerPoint if a projector is available, but I can do without it if necessary. Many libraries and churches have suitable rooms available for free community use-- just call around or network to find a space.
  • Decide on lunch arrangements (brown bag, delivered pizza, or fast food).
  • Post or pass out flyers (I can e-mail you a Word file to which you can add date and location).
  • Collect registrations and funds.
  • E-mail location address to me so that I can MapQuest the driving directions.

On the day of the workshop:

  • Arrive at the workshop site 15-30 minutes early to open the room and welcome attendees.
  • As a thank-you for hosting, you and your student may enjoy the workshop for free!

  • Enjoy the workshop!
