It's Our Thanksgiving Celebration!
Thanksgiving is my very favorite holiday, and I'd like to invite you to celebrate it with special savings through November 30, 2011.
I'm grateful to the Lord for the strength and courage He gives, and I'm also grateful for the opportunities I've had in homeschooling and home business. I'd just like to say "thank you" to each of you who have made time to homeschool your children. It's not an easy job to make time for things that matter, but there can be joy in the journey.
Just in time for the holiday, I've created a mini-poster of "11 Things a Paragraph Can Do." It's taken from the Excellence in Literature Handbook for Writers (coming very soon). The front lists the 11 paragraph functions and the back briefly explains each of them. Click the docment title to download it.
Also, if you've lost your copy of the Excellence in Literature evaluation rubric, you can click the title link to get another copy.
Blessings to each of you,
--Janice

I recently had the privilege of having the first level of Excellence in Literature reviewed by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine's Review Crew. Wow! I'll be sharing direct links to the reviews on the website soon, but for now, you can access all 100 reviews through this Linky page. Enjoy!

A curriculum for grades 8-12
These challenging, self-directed courses introduce students to full-length great literature in its historical context, while developing skills in writing and literary analysis. English I and II provide foundational skills; English III and IV offer a chronological survey of American and British literature, and English V focuses on European literature.
(English II is not quite ready. Watch for it soon!)
An Honors Track, with additional readings and writing, for each course encourages preparation for AP or CLEP exams. Some students who have taken this track have been permitted advanced placement in college based upon the material covered. Students who complete five years of Excellence in Literature have the potential of earning 24-30 hours of college credit through testing.
- Self-Directed, with Week-by-Week Lesson Plans
- Classic Literature-Based (mostly full-length novels, plays, and poetry)
- College Preparatory, with Optional Honors Track
- High-School English for Home Schools, Private Schools, and Charter Schools
Excellence in Literature, together with Evaluating Writing the Easy Way, will help you provide your student with a solid introduction to the great classics. Your student will be able to develop college-level writing skills through the careful sequence of writing assignments, and will have a firm foundation in cultural literacy.
Do you worry about evaluating your student’s writing?
Do you sometimes feel as if you’re missing something in the evaluation process?
Evaluating writing is so much more than just “correcting papers.” It can affect your student’s feelings about writing, his or her chance of academic success, and even the relationship you share.
In this simple, approachable little book, you’ll learn the things you need to know in order to become the writing evaluator you want to be. Get it for only $5 when you purchase any Excellence in Literature book.

Spelling Made Easy uses homonyms and puzzles to make spelling instruction easy and painless for middle-grade students. As a bonus, students build vocabulary as they are studying each homonym group!
There are 290 homonym groups in the book. Every ten groups form a lesson, which includes the list of homonyms with word definitions, plus four puzzles. There is a suggested assignment schedule for using the book over the course of one year or two years, so you’ll know exactly what to do and when to do it. Daily assignments are adaptable to your student’s pace, and every puzzle has an answer key.
Commas Made Easy by Connie Schenkelberg is a short e-book designed to take the confusion out of how to use commas. Enjoy!
