English I and II Honors Option

Extra reading: Extra reading for honors students will be listed on the syllabus. Some items will be additional works by authors we are studying; other items will be context works that will help to round out your knowledge of each literary period. This reading may be done during or between semesters, and should be recorded in the reading log.

Research paper: This 6-page paper, due two weeks after the end of the spring semester will be on a topic provided in the syllabus. The paper will be presented in MLA format (http://webster.commnet.edu/mla/index.shtml), and will include a Works Cited page, with a minimum of three resources. One of the resources may be an Internet source chosen in accordance with accepted academic standards. For detailed instructions on the process of researching, writing, and documenting a research paper, you will need to consult your writing handbook, Writers Inc., and other resources.

CLEP Test (English II): The comprehensive final exam, which will be taken after English II (or later, during the final year of high school), will be either the Freshman Composition, English Composition with Essay, or the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP. This 90-minute, multiple-choice, computer-based exam can be taken by appointment at a local college or community college. Many colleges and universities grant advanced placement and/or college credit (usually six credits) for a passing score on this exam, so it is well worth the effort. (I earned 45 credits toward my B.A. by taking exams.)
