Microbusiness Resources
Microbusiness: A small business; usually owned and operated by one person; can be started and run at low cost and low risk.
What recommends commerce to me is its enterprise and bravery.
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
Every high school student should study entrepreneurship and small business. Here's the curriculum you need.
Microbusiness for Teens Set
CPA Carol Topp has written a remarkably clear and concise set of four books that will help your teen (or perhaps even you) create a successful micro-business.
Each book builds upon the previous one, developing the business skills necessary for success.
The four books are:
- Starting a Microbusiness
- Running a Microbusiness
- Money and Taxes in a Microbusiness
- Microbusiness for Teens Workbook

I've been in business for many years, yet I've placed Carol Topp's excellenct advice among my frequently used reference books. Her writing style is simple and clear, and she walks her reader logically through each step in building a successful business. Each book builds upon the other, and the Workbook provides an ideal way to work through planning, research, and setting up systems.
Carol's greatest strength is in her experience as a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). In her role as accountant to many small businesses, she has seen what works, as well as what doesn't. Her overview of money- and tax-related record-keeping is the clearest and simplest I've encountered. If I'd had this series when I began my business, I would have certainly had a better idea of what records needed to be kept, and how to do it.
