A great SAT score is not the only thing you need to be academically competitive, but it will probably help. A great SAT score can be a positive tipping factor in both college admissions and scholarship competitions.
In this workshop, you’ll learn the tips, techniques, and strategies that top-scoring test takers use to boost their scores. Give yourself a competitive edge through organized, strategic practice, and you can approach the SAT with confidence.
Your teacher for this workshop is Janice Campbell, a writer, speaker, and experienced test-taker. Throughout high school and college (where she amassed over 45 credits by exam), Janice always enjoyed the challenge of ‘conquering the test’ and emerging with top-level scores.
In this three-hour workshop and the accompanying 60+ page worktext, she shares the tips, techniques, and strategies that she has used to score high on standardized tests, with an emphasis on those that will help you conquer the SAT.
“I wrote to you last year, but again want to thank you for your materials. I listen to your workshop CDs over and over in order to keep my head straight! And all the books I have purchased from you are very clear, direct, and helpful.” Beth M., Pennsylvania |
Each section of the worktext provides basic information and brief assignments to help your student remember the techniques and strategies he or she is learning in the audio workshop (the audio workshop will refer to "handouts"-- these have been incorporated in the worktext). Both the worktext and workshop have three main sections-- Critical Reading, Writing, and Math. The audio portion for each section is approximately one hour, and worktext assignments are designed to reinforce learning both during and after the audio workshop.

Math Section You won't find a crash course for everything you should have learned in the last ten years of math and language arts. Instead, I'll remind you of the essential basics-- things you may remember but don't expect to find on the SAT. We'll look at each type of problem, and I'll share my very best tips and shortcuts for solving them in the least amount of time possible.
You won't find fake practice tests, because I believe it's essential to practice on genuine tests created by the official SAT publisher. I'll provide a link to a free sample test, and recommend a resource that will provide all the genuine SAT-publisher-created exams you'll need.
You won't find a repeat of the long, step-by-step instructions found on the SAT. Instead, as we discuss each type of problem on the audio recording, you can read the instructions and study it on the free sample test. In the worktext, we'll cover alternate ways to approach and solve each type of problem (unless it's best to follow the publisher's instructions). Either way, I've tried to keep Conquer the Test! from being overwhelmingly long and complex, while still covering the essentials.
You won't find a formal, stiff, studio-recorded workshop. Instead, you'll sit in on a relaxed, "gather 'round the table" kind of workshop, in which I talk with students (and they sometimes talk back) in an informal, live-seminar setting. You'll hear personal anecdotes, because I've heard over and over from students that that is what makes everything seem doable.
At a recent workshop, a student spoke to me afterward. He said, "I didn't want to come, because I thought you'd be one of those know-it-all people. I'm glad I came, though, because I think I know more math than you do, and with all the test-taking strategies you taught us, I know I can do well on the SAT. I would have never known what I needed to practice if I hadn't come!" |
Conquer the Test! is a study guide for the test-taking tips, techniques, and strategies that will help your student score higher. The audio workshop provides friendly guidance through the elements of the exam, and the worktext provides brief and a structured study sequence for getting acquainted with every type of problem on the test.
If your student is motivated and disciplined enough to sit down and study through an 800+-page study guide on his or her own, you may not need Conquer the Test. If your student works better with a helping hand, Conquer the Test may be exactly what you're looking for.
I recommend that you also have a book that contains several full-length practice tests, and I've recommended the ones I believe are best on the download page and in the "Resources" section of the worktext. Working through multiple practice tests will give your student the opportunity to internalize the "freeway methods" of problem-solving learned in Conquer the Test. When the test-taking strategies are practiced frequently enough to become automatic, your student will be relaxed and confident, and able to work quickly and competently through each type of problem he or she will encounter on the SAT.*
This workshop is designed for high school and advanced intermediate-school students who are preparing for the SAT or PSAT.
If your student listens to the audio workshop and works through the short assignments in the worktext, and takes the recommended practice tests, I guarantee that he or she will be able to approach the SAT with confidence, and a measure of competence. I can't, of course, guarantee a perfect score-- there are too many variables. What I can promise is that Conquer the Test will help your student be better prepared, and ready to compete.
